HOW TO BE SUSTAINABLE AT HOME
Sustainable home SILOU-tions, involves no compromise in terms of quality, efficacy or luxury. It’s a beautiful thing.
At SILOU, we are committed to creating elevated active essentials that are both premium and sustainable - not either-or. We’ve created our own strict standards of what we consider sustainable design, in all our products sold at SilouLondon.com. Sustainable for us means a product that is made without a long (and ever-evolving) list of properties lined to harmful health conditions and environmental effects. Which can range from cancer in toxic materials to plain old skin irritation. With new sustainable materials emerging, we are constantly testing the best fabrics to ensure we deliver activewear pieces made from the most sustainable and durable materials.
Creating a conscious effort to be more sustainable is a great start, but knowing how to apply it to your everyday life can feel confusing. The science can be murky, but we go for the clear offenders. Is your bathroom filled with half-full plastic beauty bottles? or are you regularly putting your synthetic pieces in a clothes wash? If you’re a yes to those prompts, we can help, with small things that make a big difference; all from the comfort of your home.
Our ultimate goal? that more people find sustainable SILOU-tions part of their everyday, so one day we won’t ever have to wonder whether our recent purchases will ever biodegrade, because all of it will be safe for us and the planet.
Recycle unwanted clothes
Are you considering throwing out those old jeans and buying a new pair? Sending an old shirt to a charity shop? Why not see if you can bring some new life to your old clothes. All you need is a little imagination, a small sewing kit, or a visit to your local clothing alterations and the possibilities are endless.
Use a washing bag
Did you know that when you wash your clothes you are releasing little microfibres into the water system which are too small to be filtered out and end up in our oceans, rivers and even our food supply. These fibres are mainly found in synthetic clothing. We know it is pretty impossible to buy a whole wardrobe with no synthetic materials which is why the guppy friend is your new sustainable saviour.
Reduce Beauty Plastic
Have you ever thought about how much plastic waste comes from skin care and cleaning products “When it comes to beauty packaging, 95% of it is thrown out after just one use, and only 14% of plastic makes it to a recycling centre. “ Have you ever thought about how much of an impact you could have by just making your own cleaning products or hair mask? The average hair mask can set you back anywhere between £10 and £50 and with every tub you throw away you are contributing to the beauty industry’s growing waste problem. Why not create your mask with all-natural ingredients that you are guaranteed to have sitting at home. For dry and dull hair mix together:
1 teaspoon of honey, 1 egg, 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar.
Leave this on for 30-40 minutes, your scalp will thank you for it.
Home Cleaning
Avoid toxins and hold on to that old detergent bottle and mix up your own potion. Just as effective and a fraction of the price, not only are homemade cleaning products kind to the planet, they’re kind to your wallet.
All purpose Cleaner recipe:
1/2 cup white or cider vinegar
2 cups water
1/4 cup rubbing alcohol 70% concentration
1 to 2 drops of essential oil for smell (optional)
